Tipos de bolsos de mujer: nombres y cuál elegir

Types of women's handbags: names and which one to choose

Baguette, crossbody, tote, hobo, clutch. Bag names have become a little language of their own, and it’s not always clear what each word means or what each style is designed for in real life.

This guide breaks down the women’s bag styles that really matter: how to recognize them, how to wear them, what they can hold, and when they work best. No seasonal trends. Just practical insight.

Why it pays to know what each bag is called

It’s not a vocabulary issue. It’s about buying well each handbag.

When you know how to name what you’re looking for, you can filter and compare more effectively, and stop accumulating similar bags that all serve the same purpose. Most wardrobes don’t need more bags. They need the right types of bags, one for each occasion.

Every style is defined by three variables: how it’s worn (by hand, over the shoulder, or crossbody), how much structure it has (rigid or flexible), and how much it holds. With these three keys, you can understand any bag.

The 10 women’s bag styles you need to know

1. Baguette bag

Elongated, narrow, and with a short handle. Its name comes from the French baguette because it’s carried the same way: tucked under the arm or worn under the elbow or over the shoulder. It emerged in the nineties and has never fully gone away, because its silhouette makes a statement without taking up space.

It’s for the woman who carries only the essentials and wants her bag to complete her look, not overpower it. Our Leonor reinterprets this silhouette in Spanish cowhide leather, with two leather handles for carrying it over the shoulder or by hand.

2. Shoulder bag

The broadest term of all: any bag with a handle or strap long enough to rest on the shoulder. It’s the most versatile everyday style because it leaves your hands free without the casual feel of a crossbody bag.

Its weakness is capacity: many large shoulder bags end up carrying more than necessary. A medium size is the perfect balance. The Carmen bag follows this logic: it holds everything you need for the day, including a water bottle, without losing its shape.

If you’re torn between these first two styles, we explain the difference in detail in baguette bag or shoulder bag: which is right for you.

3. Crossbody bag

A long strap that crosses the chest and distributes weight diagonally. It’s the bag for days spent walking around the city, traveling, and going out when you need your hands free and your bag in sight.

The best ones have adjustable or two-way straps, so you can switch from crossbody to shoulder wear depending on the occasion. The Mini Carmen is worn this way: crossbody during the day, over the shoulder at night, with a strap that combines gold-tone chain and leather.

4. Handbag or top-handle bag

A short handle at the top, designed to be carried by hand or on the forearm. It’s the most formal bag style and usually has the most structure. It conveys order and a certain sense of occasion.

Ideal for meetings, events, and dinners. Less practical if you walk a lot or need your hands free.

5. Tote or shopper bag

Large, open or with a simple closure, and two parallel handles. It’s the ultimate work bag when you need to carry a laptop, documents, or a change of clothes.

The risk is that it becomes a bottomless pit. A good tote has a sturdy base and an interior pocket to keep everything from getting mixed up.

Before choosing one, look for three things. First, make sure the laptop has its own padded compartment: a loose computer among keys and bottles will end up scratched. Second, make sure there are enough pockets to give your charger, headphones, cards, and glasses a fixed place so you don’t have to rummage through the bottom. Third, make sure it can be carried in more than one way: by hand for a meeting, over the shoulder for everyday use, and crossbody when you’re on the subway or train with your hands full.

Our Camila tote was designed for exactly that, and it’s perfect for work. It has a padded compartment for laptops up to 15 inches, seven interior pockets, a gold-tone lobster clasp for your keys, and a magnetic closure. It can be carried in three ways: by its hand handles, over the shoulder with the chain strap, or crossbody with the fabric strap, which is useful for commuting. It’s made from high-density vegan leather and is available in black, plum, and forest green.

6. Clutch, pochette, and envelope bag

No handle or a very discreet one. It’s carried in the hand and holds only the essentials: cards, keys, a lipstick. The pochette is its smallest and most flexible version; the envelope bag mimics the shape of a letter.

In addition to evening wear, it works as an organizer inside a large bag. Our Victoria pouch serves a dual purpose: a toiletry bag inside your handbag, or a clutch when you only need the essentials.

7. Bucket bag

Cylindrical body, round or flat base, and drawstring closure. It’s casual, spacious, and very easy to use, although finding something inside can take a while.

8. Hobo bag

Crescent shape, flexible leather that drapes naturally, and shoulder handle. It has a relaxed, bohemian feel. It requires high-quality leather: in inferior materials, the drape becomes a deformity.

9. Satchel or briefcase

Rectangular, structured, with a flap and often a top handle and strap. It inherits the aesthetic of the British school satchel and is one of the most classic styles for work.

10. Mini bag

More than a style, it’s a scale. Any silhouette in a reduced version, designed to carry a phone, cards, and little else. It works as an evening bag or as a complement to a larger bag, not as a standalone bag.

How to choose between bag styles based on your day

The useful question isn’t “Which bag do I like?”, but “What does my day involve?”. Three questions are enough:

Do you need to carry a laptop? If the answer is yes, your everyday bag is a tote or a large satchel. Everything else is secondary.

Do you walk a lot around the city? A medium-sized shoulder bag or crossbody bag will make your life easier than any handbag.

Does your schedule combine the office and dinner? A structured, compact silhouette, such as a baguette or medium shoulder bag, is the versatile choice that transitions from one setting to another without changing bags.

Applied to our pieces, each style suits a different time of day:

If you’re starting to build a small collection, these three pieces cover almost any situation: an everyday shoulder bag, a small bag for the evening, and a tote for days when you need to carry more. We explain it in detail in how to choose your first luxury bag.

Bag style matters. Leather even more so.

A well-chosen style in inferior material will last two seasons. The same style in fine leather improves with age, adapts to the way you wear it, and gains character with use.

That’s why at Valentina Rivera Madrid we focus on a few styles and a single philosophy: Spanish cowhide leather, cut and sewn by hand by artisans in workshops in Ubrique and Elche. The Leonor baguette, the Carmen shoulder bag, and the Mini Carmen are three answers to three ways of living the day.

We don’t make volume. We make pieces.
